Enterprise Issue 7 motherboard
« on: 2023.December.22. 19:51:03 »
I was asked to publish the topic started in the Enterpirse facebook group here as well. I will do it now :)

The author: kvaczko, i.e. Károly Vaczkó:

"Folks! As you may have already seen, Zoltán Németh (Zozo) and have working hard to create the Enterprise Issue 7 motherboard in 2024. According to the plans, the motherboard will not only carry the functions of the current Issue 6 (its it wouldn't make too much sense in the first place), but we try to pack in the expansions and peripheral drivers that best fit the capabilities of the machine and the expected needs of the users. We already have a lot of ideas, but we are curious about what you would like to see in the original Enterprise keeping its basics (Z80, Nick, Dave), but in a new generation machine Bombard the comment section with your suggestions!
P.S. There will be no Nick v2.0, no Dave v2.0 and no built-in coffee maker!"

My observations in the first round:

I still say this: Fantastic development, but there are quite a few companies that could solve the "copying" of Nick and Dave so that a donor machine is not needed!!! (Because of Nick and Dave).
I'll manage it, I'd just like some info on this! We have nothing to lose :)

Ideas:
In any case, the video output according to the current standard (e.g. HDMI), as on SP Next. I think the other developments so far will be included: SD, NVRAM, Maxi turbo, etc.

Definitely Wi-Fi!

It would also be nice to apply an EnterMice card to Issue 7! By Maciej Gruszecki 🙂
Also MIDI and HDIGI would be nice...

Nick and Dave are a difficult issue. If Issue 7 needs original Nick and Dave chips it will encourage destruction of original EPs

Wow thank you!

If Issue 7 is to have WiFi networking, an ESP32 might be a good choice currently (although that is likely to be out of date in a couple of years!  ) The ESP32 uses a serial interface and the z80 would need a parallel interface (simple UART) to get its data in and out fast enough. I started a module for EPNET to replace the WIZ module because the WIZ module is a) only cable thernet, b) has bugs in non-updatable ROM and c) not manufactured any more. Officially the ESP32 is a 3.3v part  but unofficially Expresif has said it has 5v tolerant I/O pins. I wrote some VHDL for a xylinx 9572 that does the UART function (and also does 5v <-> 3.3v conversion) but the 9572 is not made any more either (although you can still buy small quantities). Unfortunately I have no time at the moment to finish the project because of family commitments. My plan was to "adjust" the current EPNET software to use the ESP32 insrtead of the WIZ module, but I have not started that bit yet. If any of this is useful I am happy for anyone to start with the current EPNET source code.

I think Kyp(EP FPGA core writer) can convert the VHDL code to a more actual CPLD chip.

Fantastic! This is what we wanted to ask!
