In my humble opinion, your new proposition.
I will try to implement that in the next version, for now, there is a smaller update:

- the background can be selected from up to 15 pictures with the new menu, only 9 are included at the moment, however
- if an image file is missing, a built-in default picture will be used instead of exiting
- there is a (lame) loading screen now in back0_m2.pic, any key continues to the game. The file is optional, it can be deleted
- if anyone builds the game from the source code, "make pictures" generates all the *_m2.pic files from the original .png images
- trying to load a save that does not exist displays an error message instead of exiting
- faster drawing of the selection
- the mouse input routine has been replaced with what I used in Bricky Prise, it is faster at 4 MHz, and in theory works up to 20 MHz
- a couple of minor bugs have been fixed
