Double LPT action
« on: 2015.April.18. 02:35:01 »
Had an idea today and here it is...

Run the snapshot, move the crosshair, press fire and move the crosshair some more then repeat to enjoy some Enterprise dual lpt 4-color magic.

Not really any additional cost of this "effect" and can be utilized in games...

This is just a proof of concept...

Graphics taken from double dragon for gameboy (screen cut from http://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/GB-GBC/DoubleDragon-Mission2.png).

The upper area was meant for a coordinates panel, but in the end I didn't do it...

Nice :)
And it can be done in 16 col mode also, I think it can be used in games also for effect.

Yeah, it's just having two lpt's: one in pixel mode and the other in lpixel mode with double lines.
So can be done for every color made.
But only 4-color modes give square pixels without having two longer lpt's and the pixels don't get too big.

Examples of usage that I thought of are:
- in a sports game: when the ball is given or in replays (microprose soccer for the c64 had them),
- in shooters or platformers: the magnified view would be the normal view and the bigger resolution view would be used for battles with big opponents for more movement space (some gameboy games have big boss battles but the screeb is kinda cramped) (this was the inspiration for the "effect")
[although we are talking about an 8bit machine with no hardware sprites so bigger opponents would need a turbo machine I guess...]
- in a sports game: when the player would get near the ball the screen could be "zoomed in" and when the ball would get out of the zoomed screen - the resolution would be changed to show the bigger area... although I think that this could be rather disorienting... so maybe only added as an option...

Tried it and as I thought it would be... quite confusing...
Added a "ball" to chase and it zooms only when the ball fits with the crosshair on the "magnified" screen...
I think one could get a headache from playing with this frequent swaping of resolutions...
Seems not suitable for a sports game... (also there would be the problem of the other player's sprite - different way of deciding about switching resolutions)

What do you think?

I also think this:-)

I think will better if the player select the zoom/non zoom mode. I think it is best for sniper or hunter game.

The border colors what means?

The border colors what means?
red is erasing sprites
white is drawing sprites
green is updating the zoomed screen's lpt

This zoom would be good for replays in sport games, or in some kind of shooter game for zooming to the target.
