Title: Hello/My EP/Wanted
Post by: AndyGarton on 2014.January.02. 13:22:24
Hi all,

I've just acquired an Enterprise 64, as the machine only, no accessories at all. It has cleaned up reasonably well, and via a Spectrum PSU and RF cable, it does start up ok.

The picture is not great, as you'd expect via RF, but basically working ok. The sound however is just "noise", like an untuned analogue TV. I assume this is a problem?

The keyboard is only partially working too, many keys don't work. I've read elsewhere here that this could be a faulty internal cable, so will be pursuing that next.

I would like to buy both a SCART cable (I've seen the instructions elsewhere, but unfortunately these are probably beyond my modest electronic skills!), and a BASIC cartridge (which I understand can come with "other stuff" too?).

Photos attached, including the serial number for logging purposes.

Cheers,
Andy

Hi all,
Welcome here!

No, the Enterprise does not have audio on the RF output, instead it has an internal speaker. (And stereo output can be used on tape out or monitor connector.)

You need to cut few milimeters from the keyboard membrane conector tail. But possibly it's needed to do agian after few months or years, the original membranes are 30 years old. The final solution is buying a brand new membrane (it can be found on the Ebay or sellmyretro.com).

I can make a cable for you. And also have a unused third party cartridge PCB, can build cartridge.
Yes, the BASIC is only 16K, for the other 48K other programs can be chosen.

Thanks a lot, good news on the sound!

How should we handle the cable and cartridge purchases please? My email is andygarton at btinternet dot com.

Cheers,
Andy

I forgot to say, could somebody recommend me (preferably with an Amazon or eBay link) a suitable power supply also please?

ZX Spectrum 128K or +2 (grey) PSU (not a +2A (black) or +3) are the easy solution.

Thanks, I do have one (which is how I've tested so far) - I just hoped I could get one I could dedicate to the EP rather than have to keep switching between it and the Spectrum!

Keyboard repair isn't going great - the ends of the membrane did look pretty poor so I cut them off square and refitted them properly (fairly confident they're in well now after a bit of fiddling before I figured out the best way to insert them), but now the keyboard doesn't seem to work at all. Or at least - I can't enter the Word Processor (which is the only way I have of testing it as I don't have a BASIC cartridge yet), how exactly do I do this please? I did it somewhat by accident yesterday - pressing a few keys, I think it was a function key to start the WP?

Fixed it :)

I rather naively didn't realize that the ends of the membrane consists of two parts - the actual connector and a separate protective (?) section. I'd inserted both into the connectors. Removing the non-connective (!) part restored my keyboard, and now every key works!

BTW Zozo did you get me email replies please? Just wondering if my ISP may have blocked them to Hungary or something.

Yes, now I sent a reply. Sorry for the delay, currently I'm working on one dead EP128

Thanks to ZoZo I now have a fully working EP64, complete with joystick, SCART cable (perfect picture) and BASIC cartridge (with bonus extra Forth and Lisp ROMs!).

Great! What is the model number of your TV/Monitor? Which are now tested as Enterprise compatible :-D

Nive Enterprise setup!; but....wow, two Atoms! ;-)

Btw, if you feel comfortable with the solder iron, you can replace the IC over the Z80 in the lower right corner of the PCB with an EPROM 27C512. This way you can upgrade EXOS to the last version (I suppose Zozosoft already burnt this one for you) and merge it with IS-BASIC, freeing one of the ROMs in the cartridge.
Another benefit is that you'll never need again a cartridge with BASIC to boot the machine. No stress to the cart port!

Keep an eye to the 512KB RAM upgrade kits, right now it's the best addition to your EP64!
