Just found a friend with a 3D printer, going to see how much joystick tops are to print!
It is very interesting question!
The joy cap at very wrong place at the original box, this is the first missing item at many machines :-(
And lot of EP128 users want a green cap instead the gray :-)
If possible joystick arms also will be good! It is broken on many machines :-(

Is this real ?! Now ? Is it an option, just now ?!
Please, describe your experiments when they done !

Well, a real 3D printer can even print a whole working EP :)

Please, LGB!
I WANT a green joy cap ! I WILL be happy with a green joy cap. And, I will NOT "kill" somebody for a green joy cap. 3D printing is a real redemption. It is a serious topic!
LET THERE BE 3D PRINTING.
Not for people.
Not for guns.
It is for the GREEN JOY CAP! :)
Halleluja.

It's just a little bit contradictory to write "holy sh*t" the first time and "hallelujah" later. As if words didn't have any meaning at all.

OR it's just funny, OR it's just comic. OR it's what you say. The point is the point. (I am not sure, it is a good translation, I'm not Shakespeare, you will see it. )
But something what we call something like "GOD" is contradictory, too. How I see. But it is FAR from the original point of my stupidity.

I have had a look at some of his 3D prints!
ABS plastic and very detailed. They do take a few hours to print but they are very good.
I will see what he can do and at what price.
I will try and get some photo's of his work.

When the golden age will be here again with the 3D printing of the joy caps, I think I will try different colors, too. :)
The favorite one will be the green probably, but that will be cool, as well, when there will be EPs on the table with joy caps of different colors. Red (like stop key), blue (like function keys) or further, what you can imagine, like yelow, and such. I could distinguish my EPs with a quick look ... green joy cap is the EP what with I use often, red joy cap is an extended or overclocked one, blue joy cap is an EP with a perfect nick, et cetera.
They will have characteristics from the joy cap color. Exciting times come. :)

I have a red one! :ds_icon_cheesygrin:

Tooo good !
But it's a bit rounded, isn't it ?

But it's a bit rounded, isn't it ?
About 25 years ago you could buy spare joy caps in the "Centrum áruház", black, green and red in one pack.
But it is a "socialist quality", sharp and burred. Apuci rounded it to make it comfortable.

OK the first two joystick toppers off the 3d Printer!
I am picking them up tomorrow to have a look, they were printed at different resolutions,
so I will see what the quality is like...
I think the RED one is the higher as the top has the non slip surface visable...
Will let you know more tomorrow.

Wow!

I gave him my grey topper from my 128 so that he could model it and this is what he came up with..
They do look good, will know more tomorrow...

what is the printing cost of a piece of this?
-
Well, I am far from being master of the topic, but wouldn't be some lathe work more "usual" thus easier-to-access and maybe cheaper too?
-
@endi, I will find out the cosy tomorrow. After speaking to the chap, I don't think that it
will be very expensive.
He said the printer costs 0.18 Euro an hour to print and it costs 15 Euro for
a Kg bag of plastic.
I just need to find out how long it took to print and how much plastic was used....

Hmmm .... not bad .... but these are a bit more shiny than the originals, aren't these ?
So I could use them for EPs without joy caps, but the original surface seems better ... maybe a less shiny plastic, or some spikies or scratches to the surface could make it better.
But it's possible, it's only too clean. After some use, it can be ok, maybe.
-
Yes they do look shiny, but they seem to have a non slip coating as they are nice to use. :ds_icon_cheesygrin:
There is some refinement to do, as the 2 I have are prototypes, but he is going to look more
into it when he has some spare time. He is now fully booked for the next few weeks.
As for the price, well he has quoted approximately £1.50 each, which I think is a good price.
The colours he has available at the moment are: Red, Yellow, White, Black and Gold.
I am hoping more colours to follows as I gave him a photo of the EP64 and showed him
the green and blue.

Yes it is good price!

I have an idea ...
Maybe we can make the 3D printed joy caps not shiny with simply some sand-cloth ... picking the joy-cap to a spindle of a slow and evenly rotating motor, and keep the sand-cloth to it. Then fine scratches arise on the surface of the joy cap, and with an enough fine sand-cloth, that will be a matte surface ... :)
Could it work ?
-
The 2 that I have had done are OK to use, they seem to have some 'grip' built into
the quality of the plastic and as such, do not slip at all...

That's very cool, did a batch of these ever get printed? I'd certainly be happy to buy a few! You could probably make a good few sales on eBay as well... :)
