Maybe the EnterMice control map can help you understand how the joystick ports are organized (or maybe it will confuse you more....).

By no means should you discard the standardization of EnterMice control when making a multi-player joystick adapter, because some games or programs will still look for the K column after the mouse, which will cause annoying effects.
A full 6-player adapter would only allow 1 fire button, because the original design has 6 groups of 5 buttons . The advantage is that each joystick would only have one in common, so the standard 1-button type joystick could be "directly" connected to the Enterprise.
But now we want to standardize a 4 player adapter with more than just a fire button, and there are enough spare buttons to leave the EnterMice control map as it is, even sharing some of the fire/mouse buttons.
I think the ideal solution for a 4 player adapter would be to use these buttons marked as spare, and limit all fire buttons to only 2.
Then, when delving with two Enterprise commons and a Joystick that has all the buttons tied internally to only one common, makes necessary the use of some diodes on the adapter.
