The original EP mouse is same as a joystick. When you move it forward, it sends a joystick signal that it was moved up, as long as you moved it. It dosn't matter how fast you move it, it signalise only the fact "I am moving right now". Ant that's the problem with it, you have to wait, until the pointer reach the target, because the pointer moves with constant speed. For those who get used to use a PC mouse is this method is a little bit strange.

I don't want the balls and pulleys for me. I have planed to send them to one of you when finished...

I can't stand (Enterprise) things not working.....
One remark to this post: You can use some hot liquid plastic for this purpose. You only have to continously rotate ball, so you can get smooth surface. The speed has to be under 20..100 RPM. There are microwave oven motors on e-bay, they can slow speed.
I would recomend to try polyurethane. It is elastic, not so rigid as ABS. But of course rubber is the best solution.

I only was curious about how to add the Patkány to the Universal Mouse Driver. If it works in joystick mode it can be used with INPUT_DEVICE=1 or 2.

I don't own it, but I would like to have one....

------------

The Patkány has three buttons. I assume one of them is Fire, but, what about the two others? How do you read a pressed button?

I have found a funny video of a Czech man that demonstrates the use of a Patkány.

I can't see the strange commands he enters on the Enterprise. I think he wants to prove that it acts like a joystick, but the mouse is not seen on action. May be he also doesn't have a proper ball. In a moment the mouse case opens...

He even tries to connect a serial mouse to the controller port with a d-sub adapter....

At last the drawing program that comes with the mouse gets corrupted or doesn't load....

-----------------

Seems that all the lost Patkánys surfaced on the Czech Republic. Why?

De most jön a fekete leves...

A „patkány” dobozának kinyitása

Sorry, I will not translate this message, Google would produce an unintelligible mess. Also, I will use the pictures at the first commentary of this thread as reference:

Now at home I am testing the patkány.

Once opened, I see that in total only eight wires are used, the four directions, fire, J common, ground and +5v. Fire is placed on the middle button.

The other buttons act as some sort of memory switches, the last vertical direction is stored on the left button, and the last horizontal direction of the patkány movement is stored on the right button. But only the middle button has auto repeat, so I don't see the point of that two accessory buttons.

The shafts of the two coordinate potentiometers offer an appreciable resistance to turn, so I understand the necessity of that 14 mm of diameter gum pulleys. Also the base of the housing has only two pads on the left side, and the ball rotates at the right and acts as the third pad. I imagine that this archaic mouse has to be frictioned  against the table to work, probably is for this that the ball housing has a bearing ball at the ceiling and two more at the other side of the shafts. The ball must fit thigh, completely imprisoned against the pulleys and bearings. It only has to be firm and anti-slip, soft gum, the same as the pulleys, and its weight is not so important.

On the other side, on a conventional(modern) computer mouse, the ball works "hanging" on its housing, and the case slides on the table by means of  slippery  pads. The two coordinate shafts are moved passively by the ball, and don't offer resistance to turn.

I have used two gum seal washers from faucet parts for the pulleys:

Mine are 14mm outer diameter, 4mm inner, 4mm thickness. They are easily found on every hardware store here in Spain. The shafts have about 6 mm dia., so the new pulleys will remain immobile in its place without glue. We have some clearance here, because the potentiometers and shafts adapt themselves to the ball diameter by means of springs.

But 14mm(plus a little of enlargement due to the fitting) is probably bigger than the original, and they touch on the upper flange of the pulley housings. It is necessary to cut a little of plastic on the ceiling cap of the mouse ball housing. Here in this picture you can see the flange that needs to be cut.

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

With the ceiling cap done and mounted in place, I have tested some diameters of ball, but I only had 30mm and 35mm ones. The first is a silicone bouncing ball that has probed to be excessively thin to serve us, but also the second, made of solid plastic, doesn't enters completely on the hole. I think that the ideal bore will be 33,34mm, being an English manufacture surely they have used an 1-5/16'' diameter.

The next step is to buy some iron balls for measurement, from 32mm to 34mm diameter. Once found the exact measure, I will search for a definitive gum or silicone solid ball. There is no necessity of a weight inside the ball, only that it wouldn't slip the pulleys or the table surfaces.

Edit: Today I have measured correctly the balls with a caliper, one has 28,5 to 29,5 mm dia., and the other 33 to 33,5mm dia., they are very irregular. So the optimum measure has to be  between 31 and 32mm.
